Despite having one of the best first seasons on television, Westworld eventually petered out under the weight of its own ambition. It's one of those powerful Westworld scenes that reinforces season 1 as a total masterpiece. By this point in the season, Dolores has begun to realize that something about her world is amiss. In the throes of gaining consciousness, Dolores is brought to see Michelangelo's famous painting by Dr. Ford, who points out a tiny detail about the wondrous artwork. It's a small detail that has inspired plenty of interpretations of the real painting, but in Westworld, Ford uses it to make a much bigger point.
