The Kano State Government has directed Imams of Friday congregational mosques across the state to use their sermons to dispel misinformation surrounding its mass wedding programme and educate the public on its objectives and benefits. The State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, gave the directive on Monday when he received members of the Kano Friday Mosques Youth Organisation during a meeting in Kano. Waiya said religious leaders, particularly Imams and Islamic scholars, had a crucial role to play in promoting social harmony and preventing misinformation capable of creating tension and misunderstanding in the state. He expressed concern over the circulation of photographs of elderly men on social media, which were being falsely presented as beneficiaries of the state government’s mass wedding programme. The meeting ended with calls for stronger collaboration between the government and religious leaders to promote peace, unity, responsible information sharing and sustainable development in Kano State.
