The study conducted in the Palghar district of Maharashtra, Western India, has found that monsoonal recharge drastically improves groundwater quality, which otherwise becomes dangerously salty and contaminated during the dry season.
Tritium levels help scientists determine the age of groundwater.
In certain areas near industrial canals, the researchers found unusually high tritium levels.
Because they had a limited number of sampling points, they had to use specific mathematical shortcuts, known as deterministic interpolators, to estimate water quality in the gaps between wells.
By showing how the monsoon refreshes the water supply, the study provides a roadmap for sustainable water management.
