The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention yesterday announced that the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce has expanded to 15 states. A Food and Drug Administration notice said that the outbreak has spread to Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire and North Carolina. Other states in the outbreak are Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In total, the CDC said there have been 10,468 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis nationwide from May 1-Aug. 3, with 517 hospitalizations. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Aug. 3 announced two deaths from cyclosporiasis.
