A study published Aug. 5 by Nature found that COVID-19 infection can reactivate dormant, chronic viruses such as Epstein-Barr and cytomegalovirus.
The study found that reactivation is correlated with the severity of the COVID-19 infection.
The study included data from more than 1,100 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and found reactivation of various Herpesviridae and Anelloviridae viruses.
Researchers said that reactivation occurred frequently in “immunocompetent” individuals during severe illness.
