Today, World Steelpan Day, is an occasion that should prompt more than the customary celebration of an invention that has carried Trinidad and Tobago’s name across the globe. The United Nations recognition of August 11 as World Steelpan Day is a significant achievement. A National Pan Museum and Experience Centre, year-round performances, pan-making demonstrations and international festivals could transform pan into a major cultural tourism product. World Steelpan Day should be more than a celebration of this nation’s past. Trinidad and Tobago gave the world the steelpan.
