The Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust has a new Chairman following the appointment of local solicitor and long-standing Trustee Nicholas Gurney-Champion. Helen will remain closely involved with the Trust, continuing as Woodland Manager alongside her scientific work supporting red squirrel conservation. The Trust is now working to transform the site into suitable natural habitat for red squirrels, with further woodland acquisitions also being considered. The Isle of Wight is one of only a handful of places in the UK where red squirrels continue to thrive, with suitable habitat for an estimated 3,500 animals. The Trust says its work is increasingly important as red squirrels face continued pressures elsewhere in the country.
