The fast-food burger chain has seen its sales fall off a cliff, including an 8.2% system sales decline in the second quarter amid store closures and a 7% deterioration in same-store sales.
And it was all enough that the chain leapfrogged Wendy’s to become the country’s second-largest fast-food burger chain behind McDonald’s, for the first time since 2021, based on second-quarter system sales.
Wendy’s system sales were $2.9 billion in the second quarter.
A Minions and Monsters promotion in the second quarter did not generate expected sales in the period, executives said.
One big reason Wendy’s system sales have declined, and the company fell behind Burger King, was closures.
