This week we're due a spectacular cosmic show - the biggest solar eclipse over Cork until 2090. On Wednesday, August 12, the Moon will pass directly between the Earth and the Sun, blocking most of the light and creating a spectacular near-total solar eclipse visible nationwide. It will be the deepest solar eclipse visible from Ireland since August 11, 1999, with another of its kind not expected until 2090. After such a long stretch of clear blue skies, it seems like a cosmic prank is being played on us - as unfortunately we are due some variable cloud cover on Wednesday. Even with total cloud cover, you'd be sure to notice the huge dip in sunlight - so keep those eclipse glasses handy whatever the weather.
