The court heard that in order to help Beswick, the police officer took two credit cards onto which his debts were transferred. It subsequently emerged that the defendant had used his victim's income details in order to get around his poor credit rating and obtain the card. The court heard 37-year-old Beswick then stopped making the regular repayments to service the debt on the credit card, leaving his now ex-partner to pick up the pieces. He said Beswick used that access to make unauthorised purchases which the victim knew nothing about.
