To date, IMAX has been an independent company, meaning that every film studio and major theater chain has some kind of deal with IMAX. Right now, IMAX’s independence allows them to act as a sort of middleman, managing the competing agendas of different movie theater chains and studios. A buyer would likely come from one of three places: a film studio, a theater chain, or private equity. Virtually every major theater chain has some percentage of screens devoted to IMAX. That would risk further diluting an already diluted brand, squandering the goodwill that the IMAX experience has built up over the years.
