India is taking another step towards strengthening its fighter aircraft fleet, with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) reviving Su-30MKI production at its Nashik facility in Maharashtra. After the earlier production programme ended, Nashik increasingly focused on repair and overhaul activities as well as production of other aircraft. The return of Su-30MKI production, therefore, gives the facility a fresh role in India's fighter aircraft ecosystem. One of the most important aspects of the new Su-30MKI production programme is the increase in indigenous content. In September 2024, the Ministry of Defence signed a ₹26,000-crore contract with HAL for 240 AL-31FP aero engines for the Su-30MKI fleet.
