The entire Chicago area has been upgraded to an “enhanced” risk of severe thunderstorms Tuesday, with dangerous wind gusts possible across the region. According to the latest guidance from the Storm Prediction Center, the entire northern portion of Illinois, including the city of Chicago itself, is now at the “enhanced” risk designation, the third of five levels the SPC uses to determine the likelihood of severe weather. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop in eastern Iowa during the morning hours, and those storms will race toward the Chicago area, potentially arriving in the late morning or in the early afternoon. Even after those storms move out in the afternoon, the Chicago area still will not be out of the woods.
