Whatever your role (parent, partner, friend, colleague), you are in a unique position to make those around you feel better about themselves. Research suggests that the more specific a compliment, the better it makes the receiver feel. An insincere compliment is worse than no compliment at all, so I encourage you to always be genuine when giving a compliment. Ironically, studies suggest we underestimate how good our compliments will make others feel and overestimate how uncomfortable a compliment might make them. That small gesture made me feel seen and also made me want to return the compliment by mentioning the airline.
