A fire in Rainham damaged about four hectares of heathland near Berwick Pond Road, with another blaze near Cowgate Road in Greenford affecting approximately an acre of trees, shrubbery and grass. Images from the scene in Rainham show fire engines stationed along narrow country lanes as crews worked across the charred ground. Firefighters were seen dragging hoses through undergrowth, damping down smouldering earth and using backpack blowers, which push flames back into already burnt areas. In Rainham, the fire came as close as the roadside, with scorched earth and singed trees standing out against green woodland and golden fields. Terrain support vehicles were dispatched in both locations to provide off-road capability and bring additional equipment closer to the fires.
