Two key people in the NTA are its Chairman and Director General, and neither has been removed or has stepped down. The Director General has a rank equivalent to that of a Joint Secretary. Then, individual educational institutions, including the Central universities that conducted nationwide entrance examinations, were also made to transfer these functions to the NTA. From 2024 onwards, admissions to PhD programmes in Central universities also began to be based on scores from the NTA-conducted CSIR-UGC-NET, replacing the universities’ own entrance examinations. The destruction of this richness and dynamism and its replacement by a dry, bureaucratic, and ideological process is perhaps among the significant consequences of the centralisation of entrance examinations.
