Most of us have a fair idea of how our FPTP electoral system works; however, only a few fully understand the problems it causes. This is why the United Kingdom urgently needs to introduce a genuinely proportional electoral system (PR), in which all votes are taken into account and no votes are wasted. They know that the FPTP electoral system does not reflect their views and has suppressed political diversity for more than a century. Our senior, mainstream politicians are well aware that our electoral system is undemocratic, unethical and unjust. In short, Labour and Conservative politicians retain the first-past-the-post electoral system because it helps to preserve their hold on power.
