In my article I link the reactions of the Catholic Church to totalitarian practices centuries before what anti-communists accuse Stalin of. What was it that a pagan life continued to offer people that the Catholic Church could not destroy? By comparison, the Catholic Church had a much more expanded and integrated totalitarian system. After dismissing this as ridiculous, I argue that the Catholic Church over the centuries is a much better candidate for a totalitarian rule. In fact, it was the materialistic nature of the Catholic Church that partly explains the emergence Luther’s and Calvin’s protestant opposition.
