WMO warns on wildfires: "Climate change increases the risk, but it's not the only cause"

Climate change is fueling increasingly extreme wildfires, but it does not fully explain their origin. The WMO warns that forest management and human activity remain key factors. In other words, climate change does not ignite wildfires, but it creates the conditions that allow a single spark to develop into a major wildfire. Although major wildfires have traditionally been associated with southern Europe, the risk is expanding into regions where they were once relatively uncommon. The key lies in preventive forest management.
