A spokesperson for Clacton Pier later said the campaigners’ bringing flares to the pier “with an apparent intention to ignite them was extremely irresponsible”, though Mr Stephens said they did not intend to set them off on the pier. In a statement the Pier said: "Kai Stephens and members of the British Democrats party entered Clacton Pier today without permission, carrying pyrotechnics and a large banner which they attempted to hang from the Pier. "Clacton Pier strongly condemns these actions. "Clacton Pier is a place for everyone, and we firmly believe that visitors should be able to enjoy their day without disruption, intimidation or interference.
