China’s dominance in open-weight artificial intelligence faces a fresh challenge from Meta Platforms, whose renewed push into open-source models could lure away American customers anxious about looming regulatory restrictions in Washington, analysts say. In a 6,500-word blog post published the same day, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company would resume releasing open-source models with the goal of “delivering personal superintelligence to billions of people and small businesses”. The releases positioned Meta directly against top Chinese open-weight models, offering a competitive performance without the geopolitical baggage, analysts said. “Many American users and companies will prefer to build with American models if there’s a good open-source version,” said Kyle Chan, a fellow at the Brookings Institution. “They would prefer not to deal with compliance risk, reputational risk and other unknowns when it comes to Chinese models.”
