When she returned to see the patient later that afternoon, a medical emergency was under way.
By her fourth year of medical school, Dr Wilks was ranked in the first decile.
She eventually graduated with merit and received the Harvey Minasian Prize for clinical excellence in medical school and placements.
From Malta, she moved to London for two years of foundation training at King’s, rotating through surgery, acute medicine, gastroenterology, emergency medicine and psychiatric medicine.
She will start in obstetrics and gynaecology, followed by acute medicine, before spending the final two years of the three-year programme focused on general practice.
