At 15, Betty worked as a nanny and rode her bicycle from Heybridge Basin to Burnham daily. During the 1950s, Betty worked in a London hospital before emigrating to New Zealand under the ‘Ten Pound Pom’ scheme. She finished her working career at Saint Peter’s Hospital in Maldon, working nights until her retirement. Throughout her life, Betty remained active with the British Red Cross, volunteering at its hut at Maldon's Promenade Park and later at the Red Cross day centre. In the 2000s, she was awarded a long service medal by the Red Cross in recognition of her dedication.
