Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio urged Parliament to approve a constitutional reform bill aimed at reshaping the country’s electoral system ahead of the 2028 presidential election. The proposed reforms would reduce the presidential election threshold from the current 55% to 50% plus one vote. The reforms have faced weeks of disagreement between the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the opposition All People’s Congress (APC). Bio also said the proposed law would require the president to consider regional balance, gender equality and minority inclusion when making appointments. “Let Honorable Members vote ‘Yes’ not for a party, not for an individual, but for the people and the future of democracy in Sierra Leone.”
