National railway operator TransNamib and global logistics carrier Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) have initiated a joint effort to expand containerised rail freight across Namibia, following a soft launch held 5 August at TransNamib’s WINCON Depot in Windhoek. The agreement focuses on shifting container cargo from road to rail infrastructure, optimising intermodal supply chains, and establishing scalable freight corridors to handle growing trade volumes. Through the collaboration, TransNamib and MSC will focus on the efficient movement of container cargo by rail, while evaluating opportunities to increase volumes and explore additional route options in the future. “This collaboration with MSC is an important step in strengthening the role of rail in Namibia’s intermodal freight landscape. By working closely with our clients, we are creating opportunities to grow container volumes on rail, improve connectivity between Windhoek and Walvis Bay, and ultimately provide more efficient rail-based freight solutions to the market,” said Kendall Swartz, Executive: Commercial & Marketing at TransNamib.
