Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis said the province wants to learn from the tragic death of 11-year-old Parker Wells who went missing in Calgary in July 2026.
((File photo by Chris Schwarz/Government of Alberta))Alberta’s government is taking steps to identify ways to improve the provincial emergency alert system and processes for when a vulnerable person goes missing.
The examination of the system follows the recent tragic death of Parker Wells, an 11-year-old neurodivergent and non-verbal boy in Calgary, who went missing on July 16.
Public Safety and Emergency Services will engage with law enforcement, disability advocates and other community partners to examine emergency alert processes when a vulnerable person goes missing, including a review of the Amber Alert system and its current criteria.
We will carefully review what happened and consider all recommendations to strengthen protections for vulnerable children,” said Assisted Living and Social Services Minister Nathan Neudorf.
