A Border Roads Organization (BRO) driver vanished after being carried away by the powerful current, and a Bailey bridge over the Tamak drain connecting Uttarakhand's Niti Valley was washed away by floodwaters on Monday night, cutting off road connectivity to about a dozen villages and the border region, according to officials.
According to Jyotirmath Tehsildar Mahendra Arya, BRO driver Pankaj, who lived in the Pithoragarh district, was carried away when the bridge unexpectedly fell while he was watching the floodwaters.
For the past several years, the Joshimath-Niti road has been disrupted by floods and landslides in the Tamak drain.
He also directed officials to ensure that supplies of ration, food, medicines and other essential commodities to surrounding villages are not affected due to the bridge being washed away.
