DNR endangered species biologist Amy Bleisch tells us the massasauga rattlesnake is Michigan’s only venomous snake and can be found throughout the Lower Peninsula, including in Southwest Michigan. Bleisch says there have been no confirmed human deaths in Michigan from an eastern massasauga bite for more than 100 years, noting the man bitten in Oakland County will recover after getting treatment. However, Bleisch says because the eastern massasauga is listed as a state and federally threatened species, it is illegal to pursue, harass, wound, kill, or capture the snake.
