North Yorkshire Council aims to maintain outdoor education opportunities on the east coast while longer-term options are explored, following the closure of the East Barnby centre near Whitby in December 2025. It suggests continuing residential outdoor learning on the coast through an arrangement with Birch Hall Scout Campsite in Scarborough. This alternative site has already been used temporarily since the East Barnby closure, with schools transferring residential visits to Birch Hall. The scout camp offers a range of activities, including coastal exploration, climbing, canoeing, and team-building exercises, which support the continuation of outdoor education programmes. The council also operates Bewerley Park, an outdoor education centre in the Nidderdale National Landscape near Harrogate.
