Tougher penalties for ‘terrorist-linked’ offences planned on both sides of Irish border - On This Day in 1976
[]
Irish News
August 11 1976Tougher penalties for “terrorist-linked” offences are to be introduced without delay on both sides of the Border.
The new legislation for Northern Ireland was first proposed by the British Attorney-General, Mr Sam Silkin, at Westminster last month.
It is the only change in security policy envisaged for the North, despite angry demands on Mr Rees to bring back internment and adopt a more aggressive tactical role.
Mr Rees has no intention of reintroducing internment.
The biggest challenge Mr Rees is currently facing is his policy of ending political status for convicted terrorists.
