You must maintain confidence that the department can prevail through disciplined work, strong leadership and a clear mission. I’ve seen time and time again that firefighters can handle the hard truth when they believe leadership is telling it for the right reason. They may still work hard and care deeply, but caring without structure is not enough. It becomes great because the organization builds disciplined people, disciplined thought and disciplined action around a clear purpose. Your responsibility is to lead with enough honesty to face reality, enough belief to improve it, and enough discipline to stay steady while the work unfolds.
