Drivers on the A44 London Road spotted maintenance crews setting up cones and temporary traffic lights on the junction with Waitrose on Tuesday afternoon (August 11).
Queues quickly began to build in both directions along the A44 as motorists unaware of potential delays continued to use the road as normal.
The bus station heading towards town has been temporarily suspended while the works are completed.
