A tree and memorial sign have been put in place in memory of John E Leslie, who for many years was signalman at Oxwell Mains signal box, near Dunbar Cement Works, until the advent of electronic signalling made him redundant in 1977. John, who died in April 2025, was also a well-known accordionist, leading the John Leslie Accordion Orchestra, and teaching others to play. A special memorial sign recognising the efforts of John Leslie has been put in place at Dunbar's railway station (Image: Contributed)His family, led by son Scott, who remembers the many levers in the signal box, asked Dunbar Rotary to include the tree, a copper-barked Prunus serrula, in the garden area, which Rotary has replanted over the last two years. Previously, in 2003, Dunbar Rotary marked John’s contribution to Dunbar life by awarding him the Community Salver.
