“When we talk about scorched plants, it starts with them beginning to look a bit grey, as the green is greyed over,” say Guy Barter, RHS chief horticulturist. If your plants have scorched and the leaves have gone crispy, don’t despair because some of them will come back. DelphiniumsThese beautiful tall plants with spires of flowers in a wealth of different colours have great fleshy root stock so are more likely to survive than other weaker-rooted cottage garden plants, says Barter. So even if you see scorched leaves and very weakened stems, if the graft is still alive, the rose should survive. Avoid removing scorched leaves until conditions improve, because these can still provide some shade to the base of the plant.
