In 2022, public debt in Africa reached USD 1.8 trillion. Debt sustainability has been a critical issue in the Sub-Saharan Africa region as several countries are facing high risk of debt distress. KenyaKenya’s overall public debt has increased in recent years. As a percentage of GDP, public sector debt rose from 47.0 percent in FY 2020/21 to 48.4 percent in FY 2021/22. Its total public debt was estimated at US$3,457 million (67 percent of GDP) as of December 2021.
