Its constitution guarantees free expression more explicitly and expansively than the U.S. Constitution. But journalists and bloggers are routinely jailed or detained in Ethiopia, for criticizing government officials, or reporting on their actions. So a lot of people are being harmed when Ethiopia denies its citizens freedom of expression. According to Freedom House’s 2025 Country Report for Ethiopia, the country’s judiciary remains heavily subject to executive and military pressure. Never mind the fact that Ethiopia’s Constitution explicitly guarantees freedom of the press, in Article 29, which outlines the Right to Freedom of Thought, Opinion, and Expression.
