The blaze broke out near Bolton's Bench, one of the New Forest's best known landmarks, just before 12.32pm on Tuesday. The area is near Lyndhurst fire station but the blaze was tackled by full-time crews from two Southampton fire stations. The blaze broke out at White Moor, which overlooks the B3056 Lyndhurst to Beaulieu road. A witness said: "It's an area of scrubland that's a long way off the beaten track in a fairly inaccessible location. Bolton's Bench is a hill with a tree and a bench at the top.
