To find a good example of where AI is both amplifying and accelerating existing trends, you need look no further than gender bias and discrimination, not least in a workplace context. A report by UN [United Nations] Women revealed, for instance, that discriminatory algorithms are re-producing old gender stereotypes and re-inforcing inequalities. A study of 133 generative AI systems revealed consistent gender bias, with more than a quarter showing both gender and racial bias. Research published in scientific journal Nature, meanwhile, also found widespread evidence of bias against, and distorted depictions of, older women.
