Somerset children’s home downgraded by Ofsted after safeguarding concerns

In June 2026, an Ofsted report downgraded Somerset Council’s children’s services to “requires improvement".
Earlier this month (August), the Somerset County Gazette revealed that five children's homes in the county run by charity Shaw Trust are temporarily closing and being handed back tot he council after a series of highly critical Ofsted reports.
Inspectors found "mixed" experiences at Heritage homeThe home run by Heritage Children’s Homes Limited provides care for up to two children who may have emotional and social difficulties.
Ofsted also raised safeguarding concernsThe report said staff had not always helped children understand how to stay safe online or manage conflicts with other children.
The spokesperson added: "Heritage Children’s Homes holds itself to high standards.
