Students have said that using AI saves them time and produces higher-quality work than they could otherwise write. The Danish government said last week that students would have to defend their essays orally to combat AI cheating. The EU's AI act includes a transparency code that went into force last week, requiring AI companies to watermark output by December. OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has signed the code but has not yet said how it will watermark AI text. Google has already introduced a watermarking system known as SynthID, although its text detection tools are not publicly available.
