As RedState reported back in May, five of the Indiana state senators who opposed redistricting ahead of the 2026 midterms lost their primaries to Trump-backed challengers. AdvertisementOne of those races, for State Senate District 23, was too close to call, with only three votes separating Trump-endorsed challenger Paula Copenhaver from incumbent Spencer Deery, with Deery in the lead. Copenhaver vowed to challenge this result, and her challenge was favored by the Indiana Recount Commission. An incumbent state senator lost his race after a high-stakes recount threw out several ballots, leading his Trump-backed challenger to claim victory. The three-person commission, which includes Republican Secretary of State Diego Morales, certified that Paula Copenhaver won the primary by three votes, defeating state Sen. Spencer Deery.
