Councils could be given greater control over the opening of vape shops, betting shops and adult gaming centres under measures to be announced by the Prime Minister on Tuesday, August 11. Vape shops would also require planning permission, giving councils control over where they can open, including near schools. Vape shops and adult gaming centres can currently open without seeking separate planning permission because they fall within the same planning category as businesses including coffee shops and clothing retailers. Concerns have also been raised about concentrations of gambling premises, particularly in more deprived areas. The London Borough of Brent has more than 80 gambling venues, including 10 betting shops within a 10-minute walk in Harlesden.
