Islanders told 'keep windows shut' as smoke from mainland fire drifts over the Solent

Large plumes of smoke from the A31 fire, which broke out yesterday (Sunday), have been seen from the Island.
Last night and this morning, Islanders in coastal areas have reported a strong smell of smoke.
Smoke seen from the Isle of Wight (Image: Sienna Anderson)Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has said it has received a large number of calls reporting smoke from the A31 fire spreading to areas across the sea to the Island"If you are affected, please close your doors and windows", a spokesperson said.
"We ask that you first check the smell of smoke in your area isn't caused by a separate fire, and if so, please dial 999."
As of this morning, the A31 remains closed both ways.
