Clashes have escalated near the strategic Natyaekan military base in Magway Region, close to the border with Arakan (Rakhine) State, as Myanmar’s military junta launches airstrikes and prepares counter-offensives against positions held by the Arakan Army (AA).
Fierce fighting broke out along the regional border between August 6 and 9, with junta aircraft bombing areas surrounding Mount Natyaekan.
On the night of August 8, a junta fighter jet dropped two bombs on Talaingtaung Village in AA-controlled Ann Township, killing two civilians and injuring three others.
"The AA has encircled the Natyaekan base, making it difficult for junta troops to advance on the ground," a local military analyst in Ngape said.
"In response, the regime is relying on airstrikes and attempting a counter-offensive toward Ann Township to relieve pressure."
