David Grannum, founder of IsleConnect and Vectis ONE, has created a useful and comprehensive guide to all the best places on the Island to view the solar eclipse. In Ryde, the eclipse will begin at about 6.18pm — reaching its maximum at around 7.14pm and ending shortly after 8.07pm. Mottistone Down and Chale Bay are also among the recommended spots for those seeking open horizons and lower light pollution. Most importantly, experts stress there is no safe point during the eclipse to look directly at the sun without proper eye protection. People should use eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewers that comply with the ISO 12312-2:2015 (E) standard.
