Ms Butler, who has led the charity since its inception, has handed over the role to Island solicitor and long-standing trustee Nicholas Gurney-Champion. The appointment of Mr Gurney-Champion as the new chair of trustees followed a vote in a recent meeting. Ms Butler has played a central role in the Trust’s work to protect and support the Island’s red squirrel population over more than two decades. The land is now being transformed into a natural habitat suited to red squirrels. The Island is one of only a handful of places in the UK where red squirrels continue to thrive, with our habitat estimated to be capable of supporting around 3,500.
