Rice University’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research just released its 2026 State of Housing in Harris County and Houston report.
Montgomery County homeowners in The Woodlands, Conroe, and Magnolia are further from the Gulf but still seeing significant increases.
The survey result is the most direct data point in the entire Kinder report connecting insurance specifically to Houston’s affordability crisis.
For the majority of Harris County homeowners who say they are struggling, it is the named reason.
Over the past decade, homeowner’s insurance (including flood insurance) alone increased 60.8% in Harris County, according to Urban Institute data analysis from 2024.
