With the Met Office considering issuing rare amber or red extreme heat warnings, Dr Safa Al-Musawi, a radiology registrar at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, said employers should rethink mandatory office attendance. Dr Al-Musawi said: "Employers should not wait for somebody to faint on a platform before deciding that flexibility might have been reasonable." She said an extreme heat warning should prompt a change in approach. Dr Al-Musawi said: "An extreme heat warning should prompt employers to review the working day rather than carry on as though conditions are entirely normal. "During a period of extreme heat, asking people who can work remotely to avoid an unnecessary peak-time commute is a proportionate and medically sensible precaution."
