Mangaluru: A Mangaluru court has sentenced three persons, including the caregiver of a 73-year-old man, to life imprisonment for murdering him during a failed attempt to poison him before robbing his gold ornaments in 2021. The II Additional District and Sessions Court found Elma Preschit Barreto, Charan Kumar and Satish Nayak guilty of the murder of Benedict Carlo, a resident of Ammunje in Bantwal taluk. According to the prosecution, Elma, who had been taking care of the elderly man, conspired with the two co-accused to steal his jewellery. When the attempt failed, they allegedly smothered him to death before fleeing with 61.070 grams of gold ornaments. Public Prosecutor Jyothi Pramod Nayak successfully argued the case on behalf of the State.
