Investigative reporter Paul Sperry said Monday that newly declassified FBI records confirm the bureau opened a criminal probe into then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions during the Russia investigation. The FBI opened the case on May 10, 2017, one day after President Donald Trump fired then-Director James Comey. Sessions had already supplemented his disputed testimony on March 6, confirming he met the Russian ambassador twice during the campaign. The FBI classified the Sessions case as a “sensitive investigative matter” under Assistant Director Bill Priestap. The FBI formally closed MARCH TOLL on May 8, 2018, nearly one year to the day after it opened.
